Location
The plaque is set into a bank at the eastern end of the Parade Ground.
Description
A rectangular marble gravemarker, now largely illegible.
Underneath
are deposited the remains of
BARTHOLOMEW CHAUNDRY ESQ.
Captain in the Marine Service
a brave officer, an affectionate husband
a tender parent and a sincere friend
He died on the 30th Day of November 1777.
Further Information
Captain Chaundry was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 24th February, 1757, promoted to 1st Lieutenant, 13th January 1761 and Captain on the 10th November 1776. He fought at Guadaloupe whilst serving in HMS Rippon (or Ripper), losing his left leg in the attack on Basse-Terre on the 23rd January 1759, subsequently serving in Plymouth as Quartermaster from 1762 - 77.
Some research suggests that the stone was found on Dartmoor before being removed to it's current location. The whereabouts of the grave are not known at this time.
