Further Information
Captain Nott's service aboard the Malabar was very short indeed. The Naval Intelligence column of the Times for 11 September 1874 reports the appointment of Capt. ET Nott to the Malabar and that for 31 October of the same year records the appointment of Capt E Kelly to the Malabar, vice Capt. Nott, deceased. The entry for 27 October 1874 confirms that the 18th Royal Irish were transferred from Malta to India by the Malabar at the time (she then having 1680 souls on board).
Thanks to Peter Davis for this information and pointing out an error in the date on our transcription of the memorial
