TO THE MEMORY OF
THE OFFICERS OF HMS MÆANDER
WHO DIED DURING HER VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD
UNDER THE COMMAND OF HON H KEPPEL
IN THE YEARS 1848-51
THIS TABLET IS ERECTED IN TESTIMONY OF THEIR WORTH
AND OF THE SINCERE REGARD AND DEEP REGRET
OF THEIR CAPTAIN AND BROTHER OFFICERS
MR GEO SIMMONDS, PAYMASTER, ENTERED THE SERVICE IN 1805 WAS DANGEROUSLY WOUNDED IN ONE OF THE BOATS OF THE HELIGOLAND IN AN ATTACK ON THE ISLAND OF SPIKEROOGE WHERE HE WAS TAKEN PRISONER
HE DIED AT SINGAPORE 27TH JUNE 1848
AFTER 38 YEARS ACTIVE SERVICE AGED 67 YEARS
MR AE SEARLE, CLERK, DIED 30TH OCTOBER 1849 AGED 20 YEARS
MR JOHN CLARKE MD SURGEON, DIED AT PORT ESSINGTON
22ND NOVEMBER 1849 AGED 39 YEARS
AND THE HON ALGERNON EGERTON, MIDSHIPMAN
WHO WAS UNFORTUNATELY KILLED 27TH JANUARY 1851
BY THE ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF A MUSKET
WHILE EMPLOYED ON BOAT SERVICE AT GUAYMAS, AGED 16 YEARS HIS EARLY PROMISE, ENGAGING MANNER AND AMIABLE DISPOSITION HAD ENDEARED HIM IN NO COMMON DEGREE TO ALL ON BOARD
THIS SAD RECORD CAST THE ONLY GLOOM OVER THE PERIOD
OF HER LONG AND VARIED COMMISSION
