Edward Herbert Pulling was born at Traine House, Modbury, Devon, on 23 January 1859. He was the youngest son of Rev. F. W. Pulling, Vicar of Pinhoe, Devon. He was educated at the Royal Academy, Gosport (Burneys); Oxford University; Salisbury
Theological College and was appointed Curate of Melksham, 1883-1890.
Pulling joined the army Chaplains Department as Chaplain 4th Class (Captain) in 1890. He served at Aldershot, 1890-1893. Cavalry Dept, Canterbury, 1893-1898. Served on the Sudan expedition 1898, then with the Alexandria Garrison until 1903. Chaplain 3rd Class (Major) Nov. 1900. Back to Plymouth, 1903-1906. Chaplain 2nd Class (Lt. Col.) Nov. 1905. Senior Chaplain, Dublin, 1906-1912. 1st Class Chaplain to the Forces (Colonel) Nov. 1910. Portsmouth, 1912-1916. Humber Garrison, 1916-1919. With Lincolnshire Coast Defences, 1918-1919. Also worked with the YMCA.
He was brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War twice, in 1917 and in 1919, for valuable services rendered in connection with the war. He retired in 1919 after 29 years as an army Chaplain and became Vicar of Morgan's Vale, Salisbury from 1919 -1923. He died on 25th January 1928 and was laid to rest 25 Jan 1928 at his home nr Farnham in Surrey. He is buried in Green Lane Cemetery Farnham. The Service was taken by the Chaplain-General and the Rev John Ewles.
He was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, (C.B.E.) (Military neck badge) 1st type, CBE. London Gazette 3 June 1919.
In 1892 he married Emily Frances, eldest daughter of Oswald Cornish Arthur of Gascoigne Place, Plymouth; they had three sons.
