According to the 1873 Guide to the Church this memorial was originally sited in the North Transept, an area now largely occupied by the organ. It is believed that the memorial remains in situ behind the organ.

IN MEMORY OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM FREDERICK McBEAN OF THE 31ST HUNTINGDONSHIRE REGIMENT WHO DIED AT TSIEN-TSIN, NORTH CHINA, THE 21ST APRIL 1862, IN HIS 38TH YEAR. THIS TABLET IS ERECTED BY HIS BROTHER OFFICERS, IN TOKEN OF THEIR HIGH REGARD FOR HIS UPRIGHT AND AMIABLE CHARACTER DURING THE PERIOD HE SERVED IN THE REGIMENT (UPWARDS OF 7 YEARS) AND THEIR DEEP REGRET AT HIS UNTIMELY DEATH

William Frederick was born 1824 in Rochester. His father Frederick married Amelia Harriotte Benson in Yorkshire 1821. He had 2 brothers George Frederick, born 1822, S. Berstead, Sussex and Alexander born Chichester 1829. He also had a sister Amelia Harriotte who is commemorated on another plaque in the Garrison Church.
