Commanded this District from Feby 1854 to June 1857
and in Mauritius from 1857 to 1862
Born January 7th 1799
Died July 22 1889

The record in the church ledger is annotated with the words "This is a beautiful bronze, the lettering raised, the whole let into a splendid specimen of Red Italian Marble. This Genl. was called the Father of the Army. He was buried at Southsea." The annotation is signed "J.J. Francis, Sexton" - the hand appears to be the same as that recording the inscription.
