Further Information
This plaque was presented to the Cathedral in 1977 by the Piscataqua Pioneers of New Hampshire. The Piscataqua Pioneers are descendants of the Piscataqua River basin's original settlers who had lived there prior to 1775. The river flows through New Hampshire and reaches the sea close to Portsmouth NH.
Despite the wording on the plaque there is no record of Captain Mason being buried in Westminster Abbey. The wording appears to have been copied verbatim from another plaque to Captain Mason in the Royal Garrison Church. That plaque was also presented by the people of New Hampshire around a hundred years earlier than this one.
