Further Information
Thomas Hanway died when he fell from his horse, leaving his son Jonas to be brought up by his wife Mary. Jonas Hanway grew up to be an adventurer and merchant in London who spent his later years on good works there.
The Burial register of St. Thomas's Church records the date of death for Thomas Hanway as 15 July 1714, rather than 12 July 1711 as shown on the inscription. The entry for his son Jonas in the Dictionary of National Biography, 2004, OUP also gives his date of death as 1714 [info courtesy of Laurence Chase].
