Further Information
William Henry Charpentier was a printer who founded one of the most renowned print houses in the history of Portsmouth. He conducted his business formerly at No. 50 High Street and then at No. 46. He is perhaps best known for his Strangers Guide, a drawing of the full length of High Street in 1842, showing all of the buildings and many of the occupants. It is this guide that forms the basis of the Old Portsmouth 1860 Project on the History in Portsmouth website.

William Henry Charpentier is buried in Highland Road Cemetery along with his wife Jane who died on January 14th 1872 Aged 68. It seems likely that as his wife pre-deceased him it is her name that appears above his on the plaque.
