"Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edmund Commerell V.C......was one of the first to win the Victoria Cross in the Crimean War when, in command of HMS Weser, he led a small group of the Naval Brigade to destroy large quantities of forage on the Crimean shores of the river Salghir. Later he saw active service in the Ashanti Wars before becoming Commander in Chief on the North American and West Indian Stations, then Member of Parliament for Southampton and finally Commander in Chief, Portsmouth."
