ARE DEDICATED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF
CHARLES RICHARD, 6TH. EARL DE LA WARR, VISCOUNT CANTELUPE AND BARON WEST MAJ-GENERAL IN THE ARMY
KCB KNIGHT OF THE LEGION OF HONOUR. HE RECEIVED
THE CRIMEA MEDAL AND FOUR CLASPS, 3RD. CLASS OF
THE MEDJIDHE AND THE SARDINIAN AND TURKISH MEDALS.
HE WAS BORN 13TH. NOV 1815 THE SECOND SON OF
GEORGE JOHN 5TH. EARL DE LA WARR. ENTERED THE ARMY
AS ENSIGN IN THE 43RD. LIGHT INFANTRY 13TH. AUG 1833
AND BECAME MAJOR GENERAL 29TH. OCTOBER 1864.
 
IN THE SIKH WAR 1845 HE WAS THE AIDE-DE-CAMP TO
SIR HUGH GOUGH. HE FOUGHT AT MOODKEE. FEROZSHAH AND
SOBRAON WHERE HE WAS WOUNDED. FOR THIS CAMPAIGN HE
RECEIVED THE MEDAL AND 3 CLASPS AND THE COMPANIONSHIP
OF BATH. AS MAJOR IN THE 21ST. REGIMENT HE WAS PRESENT
AT THE BATTLES OF ALMA, BALACLAVA AND INKERMAN AND
SHARED IN THE ATTACKS OF THE REDAN ON 18TH. JUNE AND 8TH.
SEPT. HE ALSO COMMANDED A BRIGADE IN THE EXPEDITION
AGAINST KINBURN. HE WAS A CONSUMATE MASTER OF THE ART
OF STRATEGY, A HERO IN BATTLE. GREAT IN THE COUNCIL
OF WAR AND A MAGNANIMOUS ADVERSARY. KIND AND TENDER IN
DISPOSITION GIVEN TO HOSPITALITY, BELOVED BY ALL ON
HIS LARGE ESTATES. GENEROUS AND SINCERE IN HIS
FRIENDSHIPS. TO THE GRIEF OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS
EARL DE LA WARR DIED ON 22ND. APRIL 1873.
