Further Information
The font, being in the unroofed part of the church has been badly weathered. It originally carried a plaque to men of the 4th (King's Own Royal) Regiment which is now at Fort Brockhurst.

The Font Cover was removed from the church in 1940 as a precaution against war damage. This action certainly saved it from destruction when in 1941 German bombs landed within a few feet of the font. It was kept at what is now the English Heritage store at Fort Brockhurst, in Gosport. For 60 years it was considered too delicate to travel, but in May 2003 it was returned to the Garrison Church on one months loan (it was still there in 2010). A special site was built for it in front of the altar rail as it could not have been replaced on the font which is still in the open air.

When the Cover arrived at the church it was noticed that there are four niches around the base which seemed to have once held some form of statuary. The Friends of the Garrison Church linked this with four wooden statues which had been in the church for more years than anyone could remember but whose origin no one knew. On offering these statues up to the font it was evident that they were originally part of it - all having sockets in their bases which matched corresponding holes in the cover.
