Further Information

The record in the church ledger is annotated with the words "This is a beautiful bronze, the lettering raised, the whole let into a splendid specimen of Red Italian Marble. This Genl. was called the Father of the Army. He was buried at Southsea." The annotation is signed "J.J. Francis, Sexton" - the hand appears to be the same as that recording the inscription.
